The 13th International Symposium on “Deep Seismic Profiling of the Continents and Their Margins” will be held at the Hotel Riekonlinna, Saariselkä, Lapland, in northern Finland. The symposium is organized by the Institute of Seismology, University of Helsinki and Geological Survey of Finland. We invite you to participate and contribute to the SEISMIX 2008. SEISMIX meetings have collected together seismic and other specialists from all continents every second year since the first meeting took place in Cornell in 1984.

SEISMIX 2008 will be held well north of the Arctic Circle at latitude 68º 25’ N in the Finnish Lapland. Come and enjoy the northern nature, continuous daylight and the northern way of life! The conference hotel is located in a holiday resort next to the UKK National Park. In addition to the conference venue and its services, Saariselkä offers excellent opportunities for hiking and outdoor life.

Due to logistical reasons, we can accept up to 150 participants in the symposium. There will be no preferences set to the participants, and we work on the “first-come-first-served” principle.

Traveling to Saariselkä

Saariselkä is located about 250 km from Rovaniemi, the biggest town in Lapland, and 950 km from Helsinki in southern Finland. International travellers can most easily reach Saariselkä by taking a domestic flight from Helsinki to Rovaniemi (1 hour flight, return tickets cost about 200 EUR )(Finnair, Blue 1). There is also a train connection available from Helsinki to Rovaniemi (VR). Cars can be rented at the Rovaniemi airport. There is one daily flight from Helsinki to Ivalo (located about 25 km from Saariselkä) (Finnair), and from the Ivalo airport a public bus connection to Saariselkä (about 10EUR /person).

On Sunday, June 8, 2008 there will be a shuttle bus service to the symposium participants taking you from Rovaniemi airport to Saariselkä, and correspondingly back to Rovaniemi on Friday, June 13 or Saturday, June 14.

Weather in Lapland in mid-June

At this time of the year the sun does not set at all, and daylight is continuous. Temperatures are variable depending on the weather fronts and may be anything between +5 and +25 ºC in the afternoon, but are typically +15ºC. Rain is quite possible but often the weather is very sunny with mild winds. Mosquitos are an essential component of the Lapland summer, but good clothing and repellents help a lot.

Scientific Program

As in previous SEISMIX meetings we will organize the meeting into one session without any parallel sessions. Previous experience from SEISMIX meetings tells that this encourages discussions. Posters are an important component of the meeting.

We invite both oral and poster presentations. It is recommended that you prepare your oral presentation also into a poster to obtain the maximum attention to your results.

The conference topics will include (but are not strictly limited to):

  • Crust forming processes and seismic studies
  • Active continental margins and subduction structures
  • Intra-continental collision and accretion
  • Continental rifts and basins
  • Passive continental margins
  • The continental mantle
  • Numerical modelling and inverse methods in seismology
  • Innovative seismic acquisition and processing techniques
  • Seismic exploration of mineral resources and seismic studies on nuclear waste disposal
  • Seismic studies in polar regions
  • Integrated multidisciplinary case studies
  • Classical transects

Mining and ore exploration are very important in Finland where new mines are opened and the potential is very high for economic base metal, gold, PGE and other deposits. We particularly invite contributions on applying seismic methods for mineral exploration and structural studies of ore prospects and ore provinces in crystalline areas. The current project HIRE of the Geological Survey of Finland is imaging ore prospects with high resolution reflection seismics. Because of the International Polar Year 2007-2008, we also invite contributions on seismic studies in polar regions. We also welcome presentations for IGCP474 session 'Classical transects - fundamental understanding of the crust and upper mantle processes'.

Abstract Submission

The conference auditorium is equipped with a projector for digital computer presentations (e.g., Powerpoint) and an overhead projector. The size of the poster board is 100 cm x 200 cm (width x height). Abstract submission is no more possible. Programme is now available.

Conference proceedings

All previous meetings have resulted in proceedings issues in international journals, and we intend to continue this tradition. We plan to offer a selection of articles from SEISMIX2008 for publication as a special issue of Tectonophysics. We plan that the deadline of manuscript submission would be October 30th, 2008. We would appreciate your early expression of interest of contributing in this publication. We will compile a preliminary list of contributions for the publisher.

Registration and symposium fee

The symposium fee is 400 EUR. For graduate and post-graduate students the fee is 300 EUR. One day fee is 150 EUR.
On-line registration will be possible until May 16, 2008. After that payment is only possible at the conference site in cash. Payment is possible with Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard, American Express and, as well as by bank transfer to the SEISMIX meeting bank account. You will get detailed information by e-mail after your registration is received and confirmed.

Symposium fees are: Registration after March 7th 400 EUR
Registration after March 7th (Student) 300 EUR
Registration after May 16th (only in cash) 450 EUR
  One day fee 150 EUR

The symposium fee covers the abstract booklet, a recent book on FIRE results, coffee and tea during breaks, ice-breaker party, conference dinner and shuttle bus transportations between the Rovaniemi airport and Saariselkä as well as the conference bag.

There is no program for accompanied persons. However, if the accompanied person would like to participate to the conference dinner and/or half day excursion, they are welcome. The cost for the dinner and gold panning excursion is 70 EUR and it must be paid on site in Saariselkä when you register. Particularly, we would be grateful to receive an e-mail (seismo-2008 (at) helsinki.fi) if there are accompanied persons who would like to attend the dinner.

We have a possibility to support some students with a small travel grant (about 100 euro / student) using funds provided by IGCP474. Those who are interested should send an application by e-mail. The application should include also the name and e-mail address of the professor who can recommend the applicant.

Accommodation and meals

Accommodation is at the symposium hotel, Hotel Riekonlinna, Saariselkä. We have reserved a large number of rooms for the SEISMIX people. The room prices include full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and the approximate room prices will be 103 EUR /night/person in single, and 72 EUR /night/person in double rooms. The hotel has also a suites for 2 persons (93 EUR /person/night) and for 4 persons (70 EUR /person/night). Everyone is responsible for their own reservation.

Mid-symposium excursion

A half-day excursion will be organized on Wednesday afternoon, June 11, to the Tankavaara Gold Village and Goldpanning Museum which is about 30 km from the symposium venue. The Tankavaara area has been known for gold nuggets in pre-glacial weathered soils for more than 70 years. There will be an opportunity try gold panning yourself. All the nuggets you find, you can keep!

Conference dinner

Conference dinner will be held at the panorama restaurant ‘Huippu’ on top of the Kaunispää mountain. Come and enjoy the Lapland cuisine and midnight sun in the seismic society!

Post-symposium excursion

The post-symposium excursion will start on Saturday morning, June 14 from the Hotel Riekonlinna, Saariselkä, and finish at the Rovaniemi airport on June 17 at 13:00. The post-symposium excursion fee is 300 EUR and it covers field guide, bus transportations, hotel accomodations in double rooms and meals. On the excursion you will get acquainted with the central Lapland geology and nature, and visit several reflective structures imaged along the FIRE and HIRE profiles in Lapland. The excursion will not be physically very demanding, but good water-proof shoes and rain clothing makes it surely much more enjoyable. We can accept fifty participants on the excursion, and here too, we will apply the “first-come-first-served" principle. Preliminary excursion program

Cancellations and Defunds

Registration fees will only be refunded if the notice of cancellation is received before May 9.
